Opotaka is located on State Highway 47 between Tūrangi (approx. 10 minutes away) and National Park (approx. 25 minutes away).
By public transport
Opotaka is not accessible via public transport due to its location.
Cycling
The terrain in and around Opotaka is part of the Tongariro National Park, a mountainous area. Keen cyclists should be prepared to ride on the road.
By road
From Tūrangi, head southwest on State Highway 1, then turn right on to State Highway 41 (heading towards National Park). After 2.7km turn left on to State Highway 47 towards National Park. Opotaka is on your left after approximately 9km, down a short, gravelled access road.
From National Park, take State Highway 47 north for approximately 37km. Opotaka is on your right down a short, gravelled access road.
From Taupō, take Volcanic Loop Highway/State Highway 1 heading to Turangi/Palmerston North. Turn right onto State Highway 41 (signs for Tongariro National Park). After 2.7km turn left on to State Highway 47 towards National Park. Opotaka is on your left after approximately 9km, down a short, gravelled access road.
Parking
There is parking adjacent to Opotaka, including space for buses. The access road is gravel, so please drive with care, but the parking area is flat and gravelled, with plenty of space to turn around.

Accessibility
Opotaka is an outdoor site adjacent to Lake Rotoaira. There are some tracks, but visitors should expect uneven ground, including hidden rabbit holes. There is no barrier between the site and the lake, so children need direct supervision. Some tracks are accessible by wheelchair.
Food and Drink
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic with them to enjoy with some shelter available. Please remember to take all food and rubbish with you.
