Sure to Rise: Canterbury Women Since 1893
An exhibition of Vivienne Mountfort’s felted wool artwork, accompanied by archival material and interactive elements.
The Edmond’s "Sure to Rise" image has long been an icon of female domesticity.
In 1993, to celebrate the substantial contribution of women in Ōtautahi Canterbury since being granted suffrage, fibre artist Vivienne Mountfort created a large 2 metre square felted wool artwork, depicting the factory and gardens. In the windows of the building, she inserted black and white, passport-sized photographic images of women from Ōtautahi who have had an impact on the country’s history, representing areas of achievement in art, culture, sport, education and politics.
This significant work of art will be on display at Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House to mark 130 years of suffrage in Aotearoa New Zealand, alongside a selection of related archival material thanks to the University of Canterbury’s Macmillan Brown Library. The exhibition will include interactive elements for the public to celebrate the achievements of women in their own lives. A talk is scheduled to discuss themes raised by the exhibition.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and Te Puna Rakahau o Macmillan Brown|Macmillan Brown Library, University of Canterbury. Curated by Lydia Baxendell.
